Notes

One of two hymn texts that Henry F. Lyte based on Psalm 103, this text was published in Lyte's Spirit of the Psalms (1834) in five stanzas. Following the pattern of many modern hymnals, the Psalter Hymnal omits the original fourth stanza.

This text captures the spirit of Psalm 103: sing praise to the King who redeems us (st. 1 = w. 1-4); praise him for his steadfast love (st. 2 = vv. 6-10); praise him for his compassion (st. 3 = w. 13-14); let angels and all creatures praise God (st. 4 = w. 20-22). The text contains a number of memorable lines: "Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven" (st. 1); "slow to chide and swift to bless" (st. 2); "Father-like he tends and spares us" (st. 3). (See additional notes about the psalm at 103.)

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven. H. F. Lyte. [Ps. ciii.] This is one of his most successful paraphrases of the Psalms, and is more jubilant than is usually the case with his renderings. It was published in his Spirit of the Psalms, 1834, in 5 stanzas of 6 lines, with st. iv. bracketed for omission if so desired. It has passed into numerous collections in most English-speaking countries. Usually st. iv. is omitted, and sometimes minor alterations are introduced. The principal change is that of the fifth line in each stanza from "Praise Him, Praise Him,” to "Alleluia, Alleluia," as in Hymns Ancient & Modern and several others; and the addition of a doxology, “Alleluia to the Father," as in Harland's Church Psalms and Hymnal, 1876.

Lyrics

  1. Praise, my soul, the King of heaven,
    to the throne thy tribute bring;
    ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven,
    evermore God's praises sing.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Praise the everlasting King.
  2. Praise the Lord for grace and favor
    to all people in distress;
    praise God, still the same as ever,
    slow to chide, and swift to bless.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Glorious now God's faithfulness.
  3. Fatherlike, God tends and spares us;
    well our feeble frame God knows;
    motherlike, God gently bears us,
    rescues us from all our foes.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Widely yet God's mercy flows.
  4. Angels in the heights, adoring,
    you behold God face to face;
    saints triumphant, now adoring,
    gathered in from every race.
    Alleluia! Alleluia!
    Praise with us the God of grace.
