Summary

Day by day and with each passing moment was one of 14 hymns that poured forth from the pen of Carolina Sandell Berg right after the tragic death of her father in a boating accident. She found comfort in putting her thoughts into verse, expressing an unswerving faith in the love and protection of a caring heavenly father. She has been called the "Fanny Crosby of Sweden" because she was stricken with paralysis at age 12. [1]

Back Story

Waves of revival swept the Scandinavian countries during the latter half of the nineteenth century. They were greatly influenced by the wealth of fine hymns which flowed from the pen of Carolina Sandell Berg. Lina Sandell, as she was known to her friends, was born the daughter of a pastor in Sweden in 1832[2].

When she was twenty-six, she accompanied her father on a journey to Gothenburg. Suddenly, tragedy struck. The ship gave a sudden lurch, and Lina's father fell overboard and drowned before the eyes of his devoted daughter. Out of Lina’s broken heart began to flow many songs that reflected a simple child-like trust in Christ, despite adversity[3].

She died in Stockholm in 1903 after becoming one of Scandinavia's best-known hymn writers. In fact, having been stricken with paralysis at age 12, she was known as the "Fanny Crosby of Sweden[4]."

Lyrics

  1. Day by day and with each passing moment,
    Strength I find to meet my trials here;
    Trusting in my Father's wise bestowment,
    I've no cause for worry or for fear.
    He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
    Gives unto each day what He deems best--
    Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
    Mingling toil with peace and rest.
  2. Ev'ry day the Lord Himself is near me
    With a special mercy for each hour;
    All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
    He whose name is Counselor and Pow'r.
    The protection of His child and treasure
    Is a charge that on Himself He laid;
    "As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,"
    This the pledge to me He made.
  3. #. Help me then in eve'ry tribulation
    So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
    That I lose not faith's sweet consolation
    Offered me within Thy holy Word.
    Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
    E'er to take, as from a father's hand,
    One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
    Till I reach the promised land.
